February is a transition month in Zurich. The city splits into two distinct moods: the last stretch of high-culture winter exhibitions and the chaotic release of the carnival season.
I would say that the highlights of the month are definitely Valentine’s Day and the Fasnacht carnivals.
For Valentine’s day, you can find a dedicated blog post here. As for the Fasnacht in Zurich, I want you to know that it is definitely NOT as big as the one in Basel, Lucerne or even Bern. BUT, it is a lovely option around the corner if you live here!

THE CARNIVAL WEEKEND (Feb 20–22): ZüriCarneval- Züri-Fasnacht
The Main Locations:
- Münsterhof: This is usually the main “fest” area.
- Hirschenplatz (Niederdorf): A stage with “Guggenmusik” (brass bands). It gets crowded, loud, and festive here.
- The Parade (Sunday, Feb 22): The procession takes over the Limmatquai and Bahnhofstrasse area starting at 14:30.
Who is this ACTUALLY for? If you love the energy of “Guggenmusik,” drinking in the streets, and don’t mind finding confetti in your apartment for the next three months, this is your weekend. The Niederdorf becomes an open-air party.
If you’re looking to experience the REAL Fasnacht I recommend heading to Lucerne or Basel:
Lucerne: Luzerner Fasnacht. One of the main carnivals in Switzerland. It starts at 05:00 am on Schmutziger Donnerstag (Dirty Thursday). It is loud, crowded and VERY interactive. If you like being in the middle of the party, it’s great. If you value personal space or quiet, stay away from the city. Dates: February 12th to 17th.
Basel: Basler Fasnacht. The biggest carnival in Switzerland starts at 04:00 am on Monday. All lights go out for the Morgenstreich. It is satirical, artistic and strict. Spectators are expected to watch quietly and not join the march. If you appreciate art and satire, it is unique. I kinda find Basel a lil rigid compared to Lucerne but still stunning and fun. Dates: February 23rd to 25th.
All the events for February around Switzerland you can check them in this post.
