If you’re on the hunt for a calm and beautiful weekend getaway (or even just a day trip), let me let you in on a little secret: Saint Ursanne in the Jura.
This charming medieval town truly feels like a hidden gem and despite its size, it’s brimming with enough to keep you happily occupied for an entire weekend! It’s so special in fact, that it’s been recognized as one of the “Best Tourism Villages” worldwide by the UNWTO.

Your Cozy Weekend Base:
If you decide to make it a weekend (and trust me, you’ll want to!), you can consider staying at Hôtel de la Cigogne.
We stayed there and it was delightful! The rooms were renovated and pretty, the stuff were friendly. And the location? Right in the center of the old town and they have lovely spa after a day of exploring. The only thing we noticed is the lack of AC which in the hot weekend we visited could have been useful.

Small Town, Big Adventures- Filling Your Weekend:
Don’t let the size fool you – Saint Ursanne has a surprising amount to keep you interested for a whole weekend:
Self Guided Walking Tour: The local tourist office has a free self-guided tour map, which is one my favorite way to just wander and soak in the unique atmosphere at my own pace. This is a great way to soak in the history if you’re on a budget.
Unlock Local Secrets: For a bit of fun and discovery, I highly recommend the Circuit Secret tour (CHF 12). You can book it in advance and go to pick up a special key that gives you access to little bits of the town’s history.

Local Flavors & History Tour: This one is my favorite. And if you’re a foodie like me, the Circuit Secret Gourmand (CHF 39) is a must! It combines the fun of the secret tour with delicious local treats from the region. You’ll get the key and a map of different foodie spots in town for regional specialties including a local beer brewery!
Summer Vibes on the Water: The Doubs River is perfect for a swim, a picnic or even a canoe or kayak trip.
Sip Local Brews: For those who appreciate a local beer, be sure to check out the local brewery in Saint-Ursanne (Tonnebière Brasserie Artisanale). It’s a great way to taste the region’s flavour and often has a cozy tasting room to unwind in.
Go For a Hike: Trail no. 464 is the parcours de St. Ursanne to explore the Jura landscape.

Venturing a Little Further:
Chase a Waterfall (the Stunning Kind!): You absolutely HAVE to see the Saut du Doubs waterfall if you’re in the area. It’s where the river just… plummets down, and it’s so beautiful. You can hike to it from this place called Les Brenets, or even take a boat on the lake to see it from the water. Trust me, it’s picture-postcard stuff.
Discover Porrentruy’s Castle and Old Town: Just a short drive away, Porrentruy boasts a magnificent castle that was once the residence of prince-bishops. Explore its ramparts and delve into the history of this charming “cultural capital” of the Jura. Afterwards, wander through its picturesque old town with beautiful burgher houses.

Dive into Deliciousness at the Maison de la Tête de Moine: Just a short drive away in Bellelay, the Maison de la Tête de Moine is a museum for cheese lovers. Learn all about this unique cheese, see how it’s made, and of course, for for a tasting!
For anyone here in Switzerland looking for a truly peaceful and charming escape, Saint Ursanne is an absolute must-visit. Have you discovered its magic yet? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
