The Gorner Gorge in Zermatt

Zermatt “hides” a unique attraction that most people don’t know. Yes, even people that visited Zermatt several times! It’s the Gorner Gorge. Which is a stunning turquoise water gorge within 20 min from the southern side of the village of Zermatt.

Times and prices

The gorge is open every day from 09:15 to 17:45. Entrance fee is 5 CHF for adults and 2,50 CHF for children under 16 years old. The gorge is usually open from June to October. From about mid-October, they recommend to visit between 15:00 and 16:00 as the light conditions are especially impressive. Although I visited in the middle of September around noon and this was the color I saw- Pretty breathtaking.

A bit of history

The gorge was formed by the Gornera River over thousands of years and is known for its unique formations and spectacular waterfalls. The green-tinged serpentinite stone is around 220 million years old!

It was discovered by Pioneers from Zermatt it 130 years ago and the access for tourists was created back in 1886 and 1887.

Good to know: The gorge is family friendly. In addition, It takes around 30 minutes to explore it. In other words, I suggest that you visit it between other attractions on your bucket list. Find here if the Gorge is open.
